One of our clients needed a new machine to replace a five year old one that was driving a business critical printer. Following some investigation we discovered that the printer and the software for it was only supported up to Windows XP. To upgrade the printer and the software would cost between £2000 & £3000. Ouch.

Fortunately our machine of choice at the moment is the HP Compaq 6000 Pro and that still supports Windows XP. The client also has a Open Value Licencing agreement with Microsoft so a downgrade to XP was easy and legal.

However when we started the install of Windows XP we got the dreaded 0x0000007b Inaccessible Boot Device error. Clearly we needed to install a driver for the disk subsystem to get it to boot and install.

I found this thread on the HP support site and this gave us the answer.

Firstly we had to download the AHCI drivers from the HP web site, unpack them and copy the contents of the C:swsetupSP52252Deploymentf6flpy32 folder onto a floppy disk (remember those?!)

We then went through the procedure to add the drivers, but the key problem is which driver to choose. There are a dozen or more in the package. Randolfini says in his post on the HP site you then have to scroll up and find the Intel(R) ICH10D/DO SATA AHCI Controller, select it and then the install continues happily.

Thanks to Randolfini and the other people who led us to a solution.
